New York, NY— Single Stop—a nonprofit that provides benefit screening to connect individuals to eligible benefits and resources, including free income tax return preparation—has been recognized by Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation (IFFF) as a Leading Tax Ally for assisting working families and individuals from underserved communities with tax preparation. The foundation has awarded Single Stop $150,000 to help expand its virtual tax preparation service to underserved rural communities.
Single Stop has been part of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) community since 2007, providing training, operational support, and direct operations for VITA sites. Currently, Single Stop supports more than 30 sites in New York City, at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, and at the Community College of Philadelphia.
In 2022, Single Stop served over 18,000 income tax filers mostly from populations in historically new immigrant areas of New York City. Of the 18,000 individuals helped by Single Stop:
· They had an average income of $20,000;
· 4,927 received the Earned Income Credit;
· 34% were Latinx; and
· 38% were African American.
“We’re proud to count Single Stop as a Tax Time Ally and longstanding partner in helping the underserved with tax preparation,” said Paul Lindsay, Director of Global Public Affairs at Intuit. “We want people to feel confident their taxes are done right and for families who rely on their return checks to save as much time and money as possible. Together we embrace tax time as a powerful opportunity for individuals and families to take stock of their finances and help those working towards a better financial future.”
“We are honored to be recognized by Intuit for our work assisting individuals from predominantly underserved communities with their tax preparation,” said Martin Hanna, President of Single Stop. “Tax preparation can be a confusing maze for many and thanks to the generous gift from the Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation, we will be able to greatly expand our reach using our virtual program in hard-to-reach areas, such as rural communities. This grant will help a lot of people.”
